Composting items for sustainable cooking is very simple for the most part. Usually, all you need to do is toss the things you want to compost in the composter you choose. But you need to know that food scraps will not make compost. Compost is made with a good balance of kitchen waste and carbon-rich materials. These are known as greens and browns as well.

The browns consist of straw, hay, small wood chips, or sawdust. Dead leaves are an excellent source of brown matter. You can store dry leaves in the fall and use them up the rest of the year. Shredded paper and cardboard can also be used as brown matter. Cutting the materials in small pieces can improve the quality of the compost by a lot. Here are a few quick and easy ways to compost:

Composting in Apartments
This is also known as vermicomposting. It consists of a worm box in which you can dump your waste, and you will end up with nutrient-rich compost at the end. Even if you do not use it to compost, it is excellent to process your kitchen waste in small amounts. This is an odorless system, and this can be done all year round. You will end up with a substance five times richer than soil and full of valuable microorganisms.

Compost in the ground
This is the no-brainer of composting. It is the simplest and most cost-effective method of composting. But you would need materials in big heaps. All you need to do is to bury the materials in the ground and wait.

Compost Tumbler
For those with a bit of space outside, such as on a patio, getting a compost tumbler can be a great option. Your compost waste requires oxygen, and you need to turn or dig in it to mix it up in the ground. But with this tumbler, all you need to do is to mix it up every few days. These tumblers have a reduced risk of attracting pests, so no insect problems either!

DIY Home Compost Bin
If you don’t want to spend much on your composting needs, you need to do this! If you have a tub or extra bucket lying about, you can quickly turn it into a composting bin. All you need to do is drill a few holes on the sides and the bottom of the container. Elevate the container so air can get to the materials quickly.

Compost can be great for gardens. You will get newfound growth and flavor in the vegetables or plants you grow yourself. Do you have any ways in which you compost your waste? Let us know in the comments below!
